CIRCLE OF FRIENDS
- new album October 2010
Mary's long awaited second albumhas just been released. The album, which is aptly titled ‘A Circle of Friends’, is a celebration of music and song through cherished friendships over her musical career as one of Ireland’s most respected traditional musicians.
It features accompaniment by bouzouki player Alec Finn (of De Danann), who also produced the album. Mary is also joined by Johnny (Ringo) McDonagh (bodhrán) who is also a member of De Danann. The collaboration features a number of interesting duets with Mary Shannon (banjo/mandolin), Brendan Gleeson (well known actor and fiddler) and Maurice Lennon (fiddler/composer). It also includes guest singers John Prine (Nashville) covering the Bob Dylan classic 'Boots of Spanish Leather' together with Mary. Singer Seán Garvey from Co. Kerry gives a beautiful rendition of the song 'Gypsy Davey' with Mary and he also accompanies her on guitar on the beautiful classical piece by Handel... 'Judas Maccabaeus'.
Mary is a native of Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo. She has covered some old music and songs from Mayo such as 'An Londubh agus an Chéirseach' which was collected by Bunting in Ballinrobe, Co.Mayo in 1792. The song 'The Widow from Mayo' was written by a Mayoman in the 1950's. Moving away from Mayo, Mary has recorded a beautiful waltz 'La Partida' from Venezuela.
Other guests on the CD include: Jerry Mulvihill (banjo), Dan Collins (fiddle), Tommy Keane (pipes and low whistles), Jacque McCarthy (concertina), Frankie Lane (dobro), Paul Johnson (bass) and Rick Epping (harmonica).
As it is twelve years since the launch of her highly acclaimed first and only CD entitled 'Bright Early Mornings', which was produced by Steve Cooney, her latest is a very special and welcome recording.
‘Circle of Friends’ in on her own 'Fuchsia Music' label which is located at Trianláir, Maree, Oranmore, Co. Galway, where she now lives. It is available in all main CD shops.
